California’s Great America Amusement Park to Close After 50 Years

California’s Great America, one of the best-known amusement parks in Northern California, will close on Sept. 6, 2027, Labor Day in the United States. Representatives of the Santa Clara park announced the decision on Friday. The final season will begin in March 2027 and will give visitors a chance to say goodbye to a park that tens of millions of people have visited since it opened in 1976.

Park officials announced a special farewell season called “Farewell Season.” Visitors will be able to enjoy their favorite attractions one last time and take part in events that look back on the park’s long history.

“Guests will have one last chance to visit their favorite attractions, relive cherished traditions and create new memories with family and friends,” the park said in a statement. A detailed program of events has not yet been released. Organizers said more information will be published as plans are finalized.

The owners of California’s Great America have been weighing a closure since 2022, when Cedar Fair sold the park’s land to Prologis, a San Francisco-based logistics and real estate firm, for $310 million. The park’s operator continued to use the property under a lease that was due to run through mid-2028, with an option to extend it to mid-2033. According to the Los Angeles Times, after Cedar Fair merged with Six Flags in 2024, the park’s new owner decided not to extend the lease. Last year, Great America had already scaled back part of its offerings, canceling most live shows as well as its seasonal Halloween and Christmas events.

“After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision that 2027 will be the park’s final season,” park representatives said. Dave Vosejpka, the park’s manager, stressed the importance of the park to several generations of San Francisco Bay Area residents. He noted that for more than five decades the park has been a place for family gatherings, shared traditions and important memories. According to Vosejpka, the farewell season is meant to let past and present guests revisit the attractions tied to their personal experiences.
