Trump: Russia and Ukraine Want to Make a Deal for the First Time

U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday that the war in Ukraine could end soon because both sides want to end it for the first time. He again suggested that an agreement could cover all of Europe.

“Russia and Ukraine, for the first time, I think, want to get along. We have meetings. I had phone calls today. I’ll be talking tomorrow,” Trump told reporters after landing in Palm Beach, where he traveled for the weekend. “I think it will be a very big deal. I think it will include all of Europe. It will be very big,” he said. He added that major progress was made on the issue Friday.

On Thursday, presidential envoy Jared Kushner said the U.S. held “fruitful and substantive” talks in Brussels with Ukraine, NATO and European partners on security guarantees for Kyiv and the broader European security architecture.

Kushner added that the U.S. goal is “to address the security concerns of all parties through practical, mutually agreed solutions that will reduce the risk of another conflict breaking out.”

On Friday, David Arakhamia, a member of Ukraine’s negotiating team, said the new approach of the American negotiators is to move away from focusing on the “unsolvable” issue of Donbas and to look at the broader postwar security architecture in Europe, in order to encourage the Russians to make concessions.

Addressing the issue, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said after meeting with Ukraine’s foreign minister and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas that, while he supports all initiatives to help end the war, it is essential to keep the proper order: first a ceasefire, then talks on a lasting peace, and only after that, possibly, talks on how to restore the functioning of the security architecture in Europe and, perhaps, how to restore arms control regimes.
