Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker has secured a third four-year term. The day after his election victory, he met with Chicago residents and reporters and laid out his top priorities for the coming years. Among the actions he announced are lowering energy and insurance costs, making housing more available and protecting social programs. Meanwhile, speculation is growing about a possible run for president in 2028.
Pritzker Wins a Third Term and Thanks Chicago Voters
In the gubernatorial election, JB Pritzker defeated Republican challenger Darren Bailey, winning 59 percent of the vote. The win gives him another four years as governor of Illinois.
On Wednesday morning, the politician began his public appearances with a visit to the restaurant Peach’s on 47th in Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood. He was accompanied by Christian Mitchell, the lieutenant governor-elect.
Residents greeted Pritzker and congratulated him on his victory. The governor spoke with voters, shook hands and posed for photos with them.
During the campaign, Pritzker highlighted his record to date, including keeping the state’s budget balanced, protecting reproductive rights and opposing the policies of President Donald Trump.
Lower Bills, More Housing and Protection for Social Programs
One of the main priorities of the new term is to be improving the financial situation of Illinois residents. Pritzker announced efforts to lower electricity and insurance costs and to make housing more available.
The governor also wants to maintain social support programs, including food assistance and Medicaid. He also pointed to the need to protect Medicare benefits.
At a meeting with reporters on Wednesday, he stressed that improving residents’ living conditions requires both reducing everyday expenses and creating opportunities to earn higher wages.
These pledges will be among the most important tests for Pritzker’s administration in the term now beginning.
Christian Mitchell Is New Lieutenant Governor. Will Pritzker Run for President?
Changes are also coming to the office of lieutenant governor of Illinois. Christian Mitchell, a former member of the state House of Representatives and a current member of Pritzker’s administration, will replace Juliana Stratton. Stratton was elected to the U.S. Senate.
At the same time, Pritzker’s political plans beyond Illinois are drawing growing interest. His victory and rising profile on the national political stage have prompted speculation about a possible run for president in 2028.
At Wednesday’s news conference, reporters asked the governor both about plans for Illinois and whether he intends to serve the entire new term.
Pritzker did not directly address the possibility of seeking the presidency. He stressed, however, that he appreciates the voters’ trust and intends to keep working for the state.
