The student center at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) was evacuated Wednesday afternoon after an incident involving two students. According to university officials, one of them tried to attack the other with a knife. The potential victim was not injured. The suspected attacker was detained by police, and the building was closed until authorities finish their work.

Attempted Knife Attack at UIC

The incident took place on the second floor of the Student Center East building at 750 S. Halsted Street in Chicago. Police were called to the hallway between rooms 605 and 606.

University of Illinois Chicago officials said the incident involved two of the school’s students. One of them allegedly tried to stab the other with a knife.

The potential victim, however, was not attacked and suffered no injuries. The university also said the safety of the other students was not at risk.

The suspected attacker was detained by officers.

Witnesses described the situation as chaotic. Police arrived at the scene, and part of the hallway was cordoned off with tape.

Students Mention a Suspicious Object Resembling a Bomb

Some students who witnessed the police intervention questioned the claim that the detained man was a UIC student. University officials, however, said officially that the incident involved two students.

There were also accounts of a possible bomb threat. One witness said that during the evacuation, an officer told him a suspicious object resembling a bomb had been found.

Neither police nor university representatives have confirmed that information. It is therefore unclear whether such an object was actually found and whether it had any connection to the incident.

Student Center Closed Until Further Notice

After the incident, university officials ordered the evacuation of the Student Center East building. They also decided that the facility would remain closed overnight while authorities continue their work.

According to the official statement, the potential victim was not injured, and the situation no longer posed a threat to other students.

For now, no details have been released about the detained person’s motives or any charges that may be brought.
