Democrat Michael Ferguson won the race for District 100 of the Florida House of Representatives in Broward County. He defeated Republican Yoni Anijar in the contest for the seat held by Chip LaMarca, who could not seek another term.
With 96% of precincts counted, Ferguson had 51.85% of the vote and Anijar had 48.15%. According to WLRN, Ferguson, a U.S. Air Force veteran, is the first Democrat in half a century to win the district. The result takes away from Republicans the only district they had recently held that lies entirely within Broward County.
Ferguson is from Lauderdale-by-the-Sea and had no opponent in the Democratic primary. He served in the Air Force as a military prosecutor, defense counsel and special trial counsel, then returned to private practice. The district runs along the Broward coast from Fort Lauderdale to the Palm Beach County line. It includes parts of Pompano Beach, Lighthouse Point and Deerfield Beach.
After the election, Ferguson said he would fight in Tallahassee for lower property insurance premiums and for reducing the cost of living. Christine Hunschofsky, the designated House Democratic leader, commented on the win. She called it one of the party’s important victories in South Florida.
Other state legislative races were also decided the same evening. Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco, a Republican, defeated Democrat Jordan Hensley in a special election for state Senate District 21. With some precincts counted, Nocco had 57.66% of the vote and Hensley had 42.34%. Nocco will finish the two-year term of the outgoing senator. The district includes parts of Pasco and Pinellas counties.
Florida Politics also reports that Democrat Eric Gray took House District 35, defeating incumbent Republican Erika Booth. Election-night results are unofficial.
