The School District of Palm Beach County said nine schools will remain closed Wednesday, Nov. 4. The reason is localized flooding after several days of heavy rain.
The closed schools are Egret Lake, Grassy Waters, Loxahatchee Groves, Seminole Trails and Washington elementary schools; Bear Lakes and Jeaga middle schools; and Palm Beach Lakes and West Boca Raton high schools. According to the district’s announcement, the campuses will not be accessible to students, employees, visitors or outside groups that rent facilities.
The schools are in different parts of the county, from Riviera Beach to western Boca Raton. Six of them are in the West Palm Beach area. According to local media, the schools have a combined enrollment of about 9,660 students.
The district said the other schools it manages are expected to operate normally Wednesday. According to its announcement, most campuses are accessible, safe and ready to receive students. All district schools were closed Tuesday. Leonard High School was closed Monday and is set to be open Wednesday.
Student absences caused by flooding or weather conditions will be fully excused. Families should expect possible school bus delays.
Heavy rain in recent days flooded roads in several parts of the county. According to CBS12, floodwater left vehicles stranded on flooded roadways, and evacuations were necessary in some communities. Parents should check the district’s website for the latest announcements, because the list of closed schools may change.
