JB Pritzker Wins Third Term as Illinois Governor. Will He Run for President?

Must read

JB Pritzker has secured a third term as governor of Illinois. In the midterm elections held Tuesday, he defeated his Republican opponent, Darren Bailey. The win is historic: the last Illinois governor to win a third term was Republican Jim Thompson in the 1980s.

Pritzker will therefore continue to lead Illinois for another four years. American media note, however, that his victory may matter beyond state politics. Questions are increasingly being raised about a possible run for president in 2028.

Pritzker’s Historic Victory in Illinois

Defeating Darren Bailey again was no surprise. Pritzker was considered the clear favorite from the start of the campaign. Even so, winning a third term is a significant achievement in Illinois political history.

State law does not limit the number of terms a governor can serve, but since the days of Jim Thompson, no politician has managed to hold the office for three consecutive terms.

The governor’s campaign team stresses that his time in office so far has focused on, among other things, reducing the cost of living, expanding access to health care, and protecting workers’ rights and reproductive rights.

Campaign representatives said the election result was a clear signal that Illinois residents support the state’s current direction and oppose the policies of Donald Trump’s administration.

Will Pritzker Run for President in 2028?

After another victory, speculation about the governor’s national ambitions is growing. It is not known, however, whether Pritzker will decide to seek the Democratic Party’s nomination for president in 2028.

Although he does not hold a top position in early polls of potential candidates, he has several important assets. Forbes magazine estimates his wealth at about $4 billion. His political successes in Illinois are an additional argument in his favor.

Pritzker is also increasingly involved in election campaigns outside his state. He is supporting Democratic candidates in various parts of the country, including Alabama, Arkansas, Tennessee and New Mexico. Through a political committee called Ready for the Fight, he is funding ads targeting candidates linked to the MAGA movement. He is also providing direct financial support to Democratic politicians, including Gina Hinojosa, a candidate for governor of Texas.

A Democratic Governor Builds National Influence

According to observers, such activity may be part of preparations for a national political campaign. Building relationships and supporting Democratic candidates in various states allows Pritzker to win allies and strengthen his standing in the party.

The governor himself is not giving clear answers for now to questions about his political plans.

If the pattern of past U.S. presidential campaigns repeats, the first serious announcements from potential 2028 candidates could come as early as the first half of next year.
