Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms will win the race for governor of Georgia, NBC reported based on results. She will be the first Black woman to lead any state. Republican Byron Donalds will be governor of Florida.
Lance Bottoms defeated Republican candidate Rick Jackson, a billionaire and health insurance businessman. The former Atlanta mayor will go down in history as the first African American woman to serve as governor in U.S. history. Her victory means a change of power in Georgia, which has been governed by Republican Brian Kemp. It is the first governor’s race decided so far in which power changes hands.
In neighboring Florida, Republican Congressman Byron Donalds will become the state’s fourth Black governor. The politician, who is backed by President Donald Trump, won by less than 2 percentage points over David Jolly, a former congressman who switched his party affiliation from Republican to Democratic.
As expected, Democrats Josh Shapiro in Pennsylvania, Kathy Hochul in New York, JB Pritzker in Illinois and Maura Healey in Illinois will keep their posts as heads of their state governments. In Wyoming, Republican Eric Barlow won, and in Colorado, Democrat Phil Welser won.
