Chicago Voting Machines Under Scrutiny as Election Officials Reject Vote-Rigging Claims

Must read

Chicago election officials say the city’s electronic voting machines are properly secured. The assurance comes in response to social media reports alleging that votes cast for Republican and Democratic candidates are being changed.

Election Commission representatives say they have received no reports confirming such cases. They also stress that the machines are not connected to the internet, which rules out the possibility of remote hacking through it.
1,200 machines are checked every day.

The Election Commission says the equipment is stored in locked rooms, protected with tamper-evident seals and kept under surveillance. Every day, technical staff check that about 1,200 machines are working accurately. Inspections and diagnostics are also carried out in cooperation with the equipment supplier, Liberty Vote.

Officials document every movement and inspection of the equipment, so they know who has had access to it and where it is located. An additional safeguard is the audits required by federal and state election laws.

Election Day Nov. 3: Chicago Polling Hours

The U.S. Department of Justice is preparing to send election monitors to all 50 states. Their presence is meant to be tied to oversight of how voting is conducted.

In Chicago, polling places will be open Tuesday, Nov. 3, from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. People who are in line before the polls close will be able to vote even after 7 p.m.
