Midway Travelers Should Expect Departure Delays as Runway Closes for Repairs

A runway at Midway International Airport has been temporarily closed for repairs, the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) announced Monday. Runway 22L is currently closed to arrivals and departures while its safety system is repaired. The work is expected to last until mid-November.

According to the department, the Engineered Materials Arresting System (EMAS) at the end of the runway was damaged by recent aircraft activity, including jet blast. “Safety is the priority at Chicago’s airports, and we are doing everything we can to complete the repairs safely and quickly,” said CDA Commissioner Michael McMurray. “We are working closely with our partners, including the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the airlines, to minimize disruptions for travelers and return the airport to normal operations as quickly and safely as possible,” he said. The department says the closure may cause flight delays and cancellations at Midway, Chicago’s second-largest airport, with the scale varying depending on flight schedules and weather conditions. Passengers are advised to monitor their flight status and contact their airlines before heading to the airport. The Chicago aviation department said it will work closely with the FAA and the airlines operating at Midway to minimize operational disruptions whenever possible. It will also keep its partners informed about the progress of the repairs.
