Susana Mendoza, the outgoing Illinois state comptroller and a candidate for mayor of Chicago, has outlined the main points of her plan for the city’s development. In a Wednesday speech at the City Club of Chicago, she promised, among other things, to cut red tape, speed up housing construction and improve relations between City Hall and entrepreneurs and investors.
Mendoza Wants to Rebuild Business Trust in Chicago’s Government
One of the main elements of Mendoza’s program is to change how the city is run and how it is perceived among local business owners and wealthy residents.
The candidate promised greater fiscal discipline, new approaches to public safety and a renewed partnership between City Hall and the business community.
In her view, Chicago needs a clear change of approach that will help attract investment and encourage residents and companies to stay in the city.
Five Goals: Lower Living Costs and More Housing
Mendoza’s plan aims to achieve five specific outcomes: lowering the cost of living, increasing the number of housing units, growing Chicago’s population, expanding the job market in every neighborhood and strengthening the city’s position in the most important sectors of the economy.
The candidate paid particular attention to housing construction. She wants to reduce the paperwork involved in obtaining permits and cut in half the time needed to approve and issue them.
During her speech, she also joked that the construction crane should become Chicago’s official bird. In this way, she underscored how important it is to her to speed up building projects.
Candidate Bets on Economic Growth
The speech in River North was an opportunity to present the economic part of Mendoza’s program. The candidate argues that Chicago’s growth should rest on more efficient financial management, greater safety and creating conditions that encourage investment.
However, the announced goals will require detailed solutions and a timeline for carrying them out.
