Rockefeller Center has announced this year’s Christmas tree. It is a 75-year-old Norway spruce from West Edmeston, a small town in central New York State about 200 miles from Manhattan. The tree was donated by Rebecca Decker.
The spruce stands 76 feet tall (about 23 m), measures 50 feet in diameter (about 15 m) and weighs about 11 metric tons.
The tree will be cut down on Thursday, Nov. 5. It will then travel slowly to Midtown, and is expected to arrive at the plaza at Rockefeller Center on Saturday, Nov. 7.
The lighting ceremony will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 7 p.m. during a live broadcast of the program “Christmas in Rockefeller Center.” The tree will be decorated with more than 50,000 multicolored, energy-efficient LED lights, with about 5 miles of wire in total, and a Swarovski star will shine at the top.
The tree will be on view from the plaza and from the ice rink, The Rink, through Jan. 9, 2027. Viewing hours will be announced later. After the holidays, the spruce’s wood will be milled into lumber and donated to Habitat for Humanity, an organization that builds and repairs homes for families in need.
