Talks are under way on a loan of up to PLN 20 billion from Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego (BGK) to build Port Polska, the daily Rzeczpospolita reported Tuesday. The bank is also considering up to PLN 10 billion for construction of a nuclear power plant in Choczewo.

According to the newspaper, BGK intends to take part in financing the largest transport investment in Poland’s history.

“I can already confirm that we are in preliminary talks on the possibility of financing the construction of Port Polska,” BGK President Mirosław Czekaj told Rzeczpospolita. He added that the bank could commit up to PLN 10 billion to a single project.

“Because the airport and the railway are separate undertakings, BGK’s total involvement could reach PLN 20 billion,” the daily wrote.

“We are taking these two components into very serious consideration. We are ready for further stages of analytical work,” Czekaj said. He cautioned, however, that granting financing will depend, among other things, on collateral, State Treasury guarantees and identification of sources of repayment.

The daily reports that the state development bank is also in talks about participating in construction of Poland’s first nuclear power plant in Choczewo, whose cost is estimated at PLN 192 billion.

“In talks with the company Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (Polish Nuclear Power Plants), we declared our openness to this kind of long-term financing. We have had several meetings,” Mirosław Czekaj said.

According to Rzeczpospolita, BGK could provide a loan of up to PLN 10 billion. The newspaper notes that construction of the plant in Choczewo is scheduled to begin in 2028. (PAP)
