U.S. President Donald Trump suggested Thursday that he may soon resume attacks on Iran. He also acknowledged that not all of his voters like the U.S. involvement in the war.
“We smashed them to a pulp, and we can go one step further,” Trump told reporters before departing for Iowa.
The president added that “while many patriots strongly support his actions against Iran” because “it should have been done a long time ago,” “others don’t love it.” He acknowledged that the fight against Iran comes with a certain price, but said he was aware of the costs.
On Wednesday, The New York Times reported that U.S. and Israeli forces are preparing plans to resume an intensive campaign of strikes against Iran after the U.S. elections on Nov. 3. The attacks are expected to be “short but intense,” targeting Iran’s energy infrastructure, nuclear program facilities and its arsenal of missiles and drones.
According to the newspaper, some administration officials say the next large round of attacks could ruin the Iranian economy and force the country to make concessions. Trump, who promised he would not return to the offensive against Iran before the elections, acknowledged Wednesday that he is not currently holding talks with the regime in Tehran.
