Prince Harry has said he wants to repair his relationships with his father, King Charles III, and his older brother, William. “Reconciliation is the most important thing,” he said of his family ties in an interview with GQ magazine, excerpts of which were published Tuesday.
Asked whether he feels regret over his strained relationships with his father and brother, Harry answered: “Yes, of course.”
Harry said many people can relate to tensions and disputes within a family. “Some people don’t want this to be fixed. I want it to be fixed. Of course I do. Given everything that’s happening in the world, reconciliation is the most important thing,” he stressed.
Harry added that although “the scars remain forever,” he believes it is possible to repair his relationships with Charles III and with William, with whom, according to media reports, Harry is currently not on speaking terms.
Asked about the couple’s recent decision to return to the United Kingdom from the U.S., Harry stressed that “the mindset has changed” for both him and his wife, Meghan. “We fought certain battles, and they were necessary, but I hope we can all finally close that chapter,” he added.
The GQ interview was recorded in September, and excerpts were published Tuesday.
In 2020, Harry and Meghan stepped down from their duties as working members of the royal family and moved to California. Since then, their relations with the rest of the royal family have been cool. Contributing to this were allegations that Meghan was treated poorly by other members of the royal family. The couple made those claims in television interviews, including the well-known conversation with Oprah Winfrey, as well as in a Netflix series and in Harry’s book.
On Aug. 26, Harry and Meghan returned to the United Kingdom with their children, and on Oct. 15 they appeared together in public for the first time, visiting Nottingham in central England.
