Pritzker Says Vance Can’t ‘Escape Who He Was’ After Republican Midterm Losses

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker has criticized a social media post by Vice President JD Vance, published after the Republican Party’s heavy losses in the midterm elections. Pritzker said Vance cannot “escape who he was.”

“Let’s be honest: JD Vance was Donald Trump’s biggest champion,” Pritzker said on CNN. “He supported everything the president did. And now he wants to look like he’s distancing himself from him,” the Illinois governor said. On Wednesday, in a lengthy social media post, Vance blamed the war with Iran for the Republicans’ midterm losses. “The reason we lost is the war. The president himself admitted it last night,” Vance said.

The post came after Democrats won control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate for the next term in Tuesday’s elections, scoring significant victories in key states such as Texas, Michigan, Ohio, Maine, Kansas and Iowa. During his CNN appearance, Pritzker also noted that Vance “stood up for Vivek Ramaswamy’s outrageous ad targeting a woman who was raped at age 12,” by her stepfather.

The ad in question is a negative campaign spot released by the campaign of the Republican candidate for Ohio governor against his Democratic rival, Amy Acton. The ad featured Acton’s mother (with whom Acton is not in contact), who called her daughter a “liar” and urged Ohioans not to vote for her. Acton had previously spoken openly about experiencing physical and sexual abuse as a child. Her mother stayed with the girl’s stepfather even after he was charged with sexually abusing Acton when she was 12. The spot drew widespread criticism, but Vance attacked the critics and backed Ramaswamy, saying that he “had the guts to run a TV ad that calls it like it is and calls Amy Acton a liar.”

“I think he has a lot on his conscience. I don’t think he can escape who he was,” Pritzker said in his interview with CNN.
