A man who pleaded guilty to fatally shooting a 9-year-old girl was sentenced Thursday to 40 years in prison. The shooting took place in 2023 in Chicago’s Portage Park neighborhood.
Cook County Criminal Court Judge Tyria Walton sentenced 46-year-old Michael Goodman for the killing of Serabi Medina. Goodman was charged with first-degree murder. According to the girl’s family, Goodman agreed to the 40-year sentence when he accepted a plea deal last month.
Prosecutors say that in August 2023, Serabi was outside her family’s apartment building on Long Avenue. Her father was talking with acquaintances sitting in a car when one of them gave her money to buy ice cream from a truck selling frozen treats. A few minutes after she bought two ice creams and handed one to her father, a shot rang out in Goodman’s apartment, and Serabi’s father told her to take her scooter and go back to his apartment.
Prosecutors say Goodman then came out of his building across the street, holding a 9 mm handgun. Serabi’s father and his friends saw Goodman walk up to the 9-year-old and shoot her in the head. Serabi’s family said Goodman wrote them a letter from jail in which he explained his drug use and his state of mind at the time of the shooting.
