DeSantis Promises Smooth Transfer of Power in Tallahassee

Gov. Ron DeSantis said his administration will make it easier for the team of Governor-elect Byron Donalds to do its work. He spoke Wednesday, Nov. 4, at an event at Polk State College.

DeSantis recalled that after Donalds won the Republican primary, he met with him and advised him to name a person to lead preparations for taking over. According to the governor, that work was supposed to begin during the campaign. The governor’s office has designated contact people who are working with Donalds’ team.

The governor also referred to his own experience eight years ago. He said his takeover from Rick Scott, now a U.S. senator, was not conducted in a spirit of cooperation. He added that there will be no similar problems this time.

Matt Gaetz, co-chair of DeSantis’ transition team in 2018, said earlier that Scott made it difficult for DeSantis’ team to settle into the Capitol. The issue was talks with the heads of state agencies. The disputes also concerned appointments made by Scott in his final days in office and access to agency leadership. DeSantis ultimately rescinded 215 of his predecessor’s appointments.

Donalds won the governor’s race by a margin of about 1 percentage point. He took about 50% of the vote. DeSantis could not run for a third consecutive term. His second term ends in January.
