Results of the U.S. House race in Florida’s 27th Congressional District fall within the threshold for an automatic machine recount, Miami-Dade County Supervisor of Elections Alina Garcia said Wednesday.
According to Garcia, the margin between Republican Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar and Democrat Eliott Rodriguez is 0.46%. Florida’s threshold for an automatic machine recount is 0.50%. Both candidates are former television journalists, and both have parents who were born in Cuba.
Garcia stressed that the decision on an automatic recount rests with Florida’s secretary of state, who orders one once the statutory condition is met. If a recount is ordered, it will not begin before Saturday. Further information on next steps is expected after the canvassing board meets again on Nov. 6.
Verification of some ballots is still under way. In District 27, officials are checking provisional ballots cast during early voting and on Election Day. In addition, 202 mail-in ballots are going through a process known as curing, in which voters have until 5 p.m. to correct problems with their information.
If the margin drops to 0.25% or less, a manual recount will be required. According to WLRN, Salazar led by 1,116 votes after all precincts were counted. Rodriguez has said he will not accept the result until the recount is finished. Salazar won in the district in 2024 by 20 percentage points.
District 27 includes parts of the city of Miami, Coral Gables, Kendall, Key Biscayne and Pinecrest, among other areas.
