Ahead of the midterm elections, Illinois Democrats spent the past weekend trying to persuade undecided voters to cast their ballots for the party. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3, though early voting is already underway.
Gov. JB Pritzker, who is running for a third term, was in Cicero, in the Chicago area, on Sunday. He took part in cultural celebrations alongside Democratic candidates for lieutenant governor, for the U.S. Congress and for the Cook County Board of Commissioners.
The Democrats’ message was clear: There is still time to have your say, but voters have to show up at the polls. “If Democrats manage to take control of Congress, they must go to Washington with an agenda that will truly raise people’s wages and lower prices, and we must make sure we fight to protect people’s rights,” Pritzker said. He also addressed the controversial U.S. Senate race in Michigan, after Rep. Haley Stevens withdrew her support for Democratic politician Abdul El-Sayed and announced that she backs Republican Mike Rogers. “If you don’t support Democrats taking control of the U.S. Senate, you should just stay quiet,” Pritzker said. “A vote for Mike Rogers is a vote for Donald Trump. I just don’t understand why she did it,” Pritzker added.
Most of the leading Republican candidates in Illinois did not campaign on Sunday. Darren Bailey, the candidate for governor, spent the day at his home in Xenia.
