Red-Light Cameras Now at 600 NYC Intersections, With Tickets Mailed to Violators

New York City officials have completed the expansion of the automated camera system that records drivers running red lights. As of Wednesday, Oct. 21, the devices are operating at 600 intersections in all five boroughs of the city. That is the maximum number of cameras currently allowed under New York State law.

The cameras automatically record vehicles that go through intersections on a red light. The violation carries a $50 fine, which goes to the vehicle’s registered owner regardless of who was behind the wheel.

In 2024, state lawmakers raised the permitted number of monitored intersections from 150 to 600. New York City has about 13,700 intersections with traffic signals.

“Safer streets are not a matter of guesswork. We know the tools that effectively protect New Yorkers,” Mayor Zohran Mamdani said. He stressed that the cameras make it possible to enforce traffic rules and prevent crashes before tragedy strikes.

“With cameras operating at all 600 intersections, we are reducing dangerous behavior and improving safety for pedestrians, cyclists, drivers and bus passengers,” added the mayor of the Big Apple.

According to data from the New York City Department of Transportation, running a red light was a contributing factor in 22% of fatal intersection crashes from 2023 to 2025. The city reports that at locations equipped with cameras, the number of red-light violations has fallen by more than 80%. Officials also noted a decline in crash injuries: by nearly 60% for rear-end collisions and by 70% for side-impact collisions.
