Florida: Flood Watch in Miami and Orlando Through Monday Evening

Must read

A flood watch is in effect for Miami-Dade and Broward counties until 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2. The alert also covers all of eastern Central Florida, including the Orlando area.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Miami, the alert covers all of South Florida through Monday evening. Localized flash flooding is possible. That most often means flooded streets and closed roads, with limited impact on buildings in flood-prone spots. Some locations could get 3–5 inches of rain (about 7.5–12.5 cm), and isolated spots as much as 6–9 inches (about 15–23 cm).

A coastal flooding warning, tied to the afternoon high tide, is also in effect in South Florida. In Broward County, a high surf warning was also in effect until 7 a.m. Monday. High groundwater levels after strong winds and high tides leave the water little room to drain. Temperatures are mild, in the low 80s °F (about 27–28°C).

Meteorologists expect the moisture to linger until at least early Tuesday. South of the I-4 corridor, an additional 1–3 inches of rain (about 2.5–7.5 cm) is possible, with locally 3–5 inches. On Sunday, 5–7 inches of rain fell on areas around Lake Okeechobee.

In Central Florida, the flood watch is in effect until 7 p.m. Monday. Bands of heavy rain are moving from the coast to the Orlando area. Schools in Brevard County were closed. According to the Florida Department of Transportation, U.S. 192 was also flooded in that county.

On Election Day, Tuesday, the chance of rain in Central Florida will be 40–50 percent. From Thursday through the weekend, it will drop to 20 percent or less. Drivers are urged to use caution on flooded stretches of road. Most flood victims die in vehicles.
