Sweden’s Andreas Almgren won Sunday’s 50th New York City Marathon in his debut at the event. Kenya’s Sheila Chepkirui took the women’s race, the second win of her career.
In the final kilometers, Almgren pulled away from Italy’s Yemaneberhan Crippa and won in 2:06:01. Crippa crossed the finish line 13 seconds later. Kamohelo Mofolo of Lesotho took third place, ahead of defending champion Benson Kipruto of Kenya.
Almgren’s time is the third-best in the marathon’s 50-year history, and the first seven finishers all posted times that rank among the event’s 10 fastest. The Swede became the first marathoner to win as a debutant since Ethiopia’s Gebre Gebremariam in 2010.
Chepkirui, who also won in 2024, broke away from fellow Kenyan Hellen Obiri over the final 150 meters to secure victory in 2:24:36. American Jessica McClain took second place, passing Obiri, a two-time winner of the marathon, in the final meters of the race. It was the first time since 2018 that an American woman finished in the top three. McClain finished six seconds behind Chepkirui, and Obiri seven seconds back.
It was the 50th edition of the marathon, whose course runs through all five boroughs of New York City. In 1976, at the seventh edition of the race, just over 2,000 runners lined up at the start, including only 88 women. On Sunday, about 60,000 runners from 140 countries took part, with women making up nearly half of the field. (PAP)
