Florida Centenarians Vote in Midterm Elections

More than 5,600 voters in Florida are over 100 years old, according to the state registry. Many of them are taking part in this year’s midterm elections and consider voting a civic duty.

The news agency Fresh Take Florida reported that at least 5,698 people who have passed their 100th birthday appear in the state’s voter registry. Those who spoke with reporters from different parts of Florida said that regularly voting is part of their civic duty.

One of them is Alice Lesko of Palm Springs in Palm Beach County. She turned 111 in October. She mailed her ballot ahead of Tuesday’s midterm elections. She is a registered Democrat. Her eyesight is weak, and signing her name is difficult for her.

Edith Hirsch of Boynton Beach is 104 and is also registered as a Democrat. She voted early in this year’s elections, together with other family members. Virginia Henderson, 103, is a registered Republican and still supports President Donald Trump.

The centenarians the reporters spoke with are politically divided, much like the rest of the country. They describe the current campaigns as increasingly grim and divided. Even so, they have not given up voting.

The oldest voters encouraged younger people to cast their ballots as well. One woman advised checking candidates carefully before choosing. The midterm elections take place on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
