Florida Governor’s Race: Candidates Make Final Push as Campaign Ends

Must read

President Donald Trump endorsed Republican Byron Donalds at a Florida rally on Friday, while Democrat David Jolly met with undecided voters in the Tampa Bay area. The election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 3.

The joint Trump-Donalds rally took place Friday evening in Daytona Beach. Reports said thousands of people attended. The day before, the Republican Party’s top candidates met in Hialeah to court the votes of Cuban Americans. According to a Florida International University poll, among Cuban voters who have already made up their minds, Donalds leads Jolly 60 percent to 24 percent.

Jolly and his running mate for lieutenant governor, Gwen Graham, are visiting various places around Florida through Monday as part of the Believe in Better Tour, which began in Pensacola. Jolly says he has raised far less money than Donalds, which makes reaching voters harder. For that reason, he is trying to visit as many communities as possible in the final week. If he wins, he will be the first Democrat to hold the governor’s office in Florida since 1994.

Polls do not give a clear answer. According to one, Donalds leads by 4 points. A University of North Florida Public Opinion Research Lab poll points to a race heading toward a tie: 49 percent for Donalds and 47 percent for Jolly, with 4 percent undecided. Political scientist Dr. Susan McManus notes that, according to some polls, early voting data favors Democrats.

For those who have not yet voted, time for early voting is running out. In Broward and Miami-Dade counties, it runs through Sunday. In Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties, it will also last through Sunday, and in Lake County it has ended or ends Saturday. Voters who do not make it can cast ballots Tuesday at their designated polling places. Hours and addresses are worth checking with your county’s supervisor of elections office.
