Trump Considered Renaming the Atlantic ‘Trump Ocean’ Until Google’s CEO Talked Him Out of It
U.S. President Donald Trump said at a campaign rally that he “called Google Maps” with a request to rename the Atlantic Ocean the Trump Ocean, but that the company’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, talked him out of it, The Washington Post reported Thursday.
The newspaper reports that Trump himself boasted about the idea at a rally in South Carolina on Wednesday evening.
The president, who has already decided to rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America and Lake Ontario the Lake of America, told his supporters: “We have a lake and we have a gulf, now we need a river and we need an ocean.”
He then added that Sundar Pichai, chief executive of Google and its parent company, Alphabet, replied when asked to “take care of it”: “No, no, no. I won’t do it this time.”
He then explained to the president: “Oceans are different, sir,” because they border many countries.
The president concluded that he would “probably let it go,” but added that he might rename the Pacific the American Ocean.
Google has not so far confirmed that such a conversation took place and has not yet responded to a request for comment on Trump’s remarks, the newspaper notes.
